Parker Air Duct Seal

Parker Hannifin is the global leader in motion and control technology and Composite Sealing Systems Division is leading the responsibility of improving the future's sealing technology around the world.

Increased emission restrictions are requiring engine manufacturers to conform to more rigorous standards of decreasing their carbon footprint. Engine components and accessories are becoming more technologically advanced and manufactured, with intricate connections, causing an enhanced degree of difficulty for sealing solutions.

The Parker air duct seal was designed to operate in the exhaust line of an engine where some of the most demanding sealing conditions are experienced.

Most heavy duty diesel engines can reach exhaust gas temperatures upwards of 1300 degrees Fahrenheit, while subjected to constant vibrations. These engine vibrations can cause significant problems when a seal needs to be maintained on the exhaust line.

The seal works in application by creating an interference axial fit in the hardware. The curved features allow for the air duct seal to move in the cavity while maintaining contact with the mating flanges. The Parker air duct seal is used in engines to isolate vibrational movement, take flange oscillation, accept reciprocation and tolerate rotation.

The air duct seal is also designed to thermally expand at a similar rate as the hardware when subjected to engine temperature. All of these properties allow for the air duct seal to meet emission standards and meet exceptional leak requirements.

In addition to the geometrical features of the design, the Parker air duct seal utilizes a proprietary coating that enhances the seal by providing a wear resistant layer over the base material. This proprietary coating, TriComHT™, is comprised of a unique cobalt nickel alloy matrix code deposited with chromium carbide and macrolide particles to provide a wear and oxidation resistant system for prolonged use. This coating is vitally important to ensuring that the air ducts seal works as long as the end product's life.

The Parker air duct seal was designed with cost savings in mind, and the patented design allows for one piece installation virtually eliminating complex sealing needs. Installation of the air duct seal is simple and requires only a press fit for both sides of the seal. In the design stage, finite element analysis software and other advanced tools can be applied to provide a detailed analysis of the seal in application. This ensures sealing performance is met in the application before the first sample parts are manufactured.

The Parker air duct seal has been bench tested and field tested to seal better than the competition.

Parker's Advanced Products has used the air duct technology in small scale designs in the aerospace market for many years. After shipping millions of the small air duct seals. The technology is ready to be designed into the largest engines around the world.
