Case Study

Parker solution improves sealing of engine gas exhaust manifold coupling joint, resulting in 80% reduction of leakage over traditional laminar ring seals

Application
Heavy duty diesel engine exhaust gas can reach temperatures upwards of 675°C (1247°F) while being subjected to constant extreme vibrations. With such harsh conditions, proper sealing is no
easy task. By using custom engineering and advanced analysis techniques, Parker was able to create a custom solution the delivers improved sealing for EGR and exhaust manifold coupling joints.
FEATURED PRODUCT:  Air Duct Seal
Challenge
Due to extreme temperatures coupled with a high amount of vibrational movement, the customer was unable to obtain desired sealing results.

Our design team was tasked with engineering a solution that would meet the following criteria:
  • Reduce exhaust gas leakage of 80% to enable compliance with emissions regulations
  • Only minimal changes to mating hardware are allowed
  • Ensure thermal expansion compatibility with mating hardware across a wide temperature range
  • Simplify installation
  • Ten year service life

Parker Solution
Parker Composite Sealing Systems Division developed a one-piece air duct seal to solve the issues the OEM was having with the incumbent high-leakage laminar piston rings and high-cost bellows expansion joints.

Features and benefits of the solution designed by Parker included:
  • Easy to install one piece hourglass design allows the seal to fit tightly into the mating hardware greatly reducing leak paths
  • TriCom-HT™ coating for superior wear resistance of seal and mating hardware caused by heat and harsh engine vibration
  • Savings to manufacturing costs by eliminating need for machining grooves in mating hardware
  • Long service life
