Screen Printable Thermal Interface Material for Commercial LED Lighting Applications
A leading provider of industrial and commercial LED lighting solutions required a thermal paste or gel that was screen printable, with no pump-out, all while achieving long-term reliability.

LED Thermal Heat Dissipation Challenge

Leader in commercial and industrial lighting required thermal management to dissipate heat away from hot components in a wide range of COB and PCBA applications. These included LEDs, utility flood lights, high-mast lighting, high density modules, and commercial outdoor lighting.

The customer looked to the newest thermal products offerings and discovered a fully cured thermal gel, which was able to be screen printed easily and efficiently without the pump-out of traditional thermal greases.

Screen printed Parker Chomerics THERM-A-GAP GEL 8010
The customer was able to screen print Parker Chomerics THERM-A-GAP GEL 8010 due to its low bond-line minimum thickness of .002 in. (0.05 mm). It offers a pre-cured, single component structure that does not pump out like traditional grease.

Screen Printed Thermal Interface Material Solution for LED Lighting

Traditional thermally conductive gap filler pads and thermal greases are typical materials available to use in this application. Thermal pastes, also called THERM-A-GAP GELS from Parker Chomerics are one-part component, crossed linked gel-like materials, proving much lower mechanical stress. These materials can be dispensed in variety of thicknesses, provide lower thermal impedance due being highly conformable and do not pump-out, or dry out like thermal grease products over time.

In this instance, the customer chose to use Parker Chomerics Thermal GEL 8010, due to its low bond-line minimum thickness of .002 in. (0.05 mm) and thermal conductivity of 3.0 W/m-K. GEL 8010 has the unique ability to be screen printed directly onto the back of the heat generating component.

Its relatively fast flow rate of 60 grams/min and operating temperature range of -67° to 392° F (-55° to 200° C) help to dissipate the heat to maintain the junction temperature of COB or PCBA components for a safe operation.

Parker Chomerics Conclusion

Parker Chomerics THERM-A-GAP™ GEL 8010, with its highly conformable, pre-cured, cross-linked gel structure provides superior long-term thermal stability and reliable performance. With its ability to be applied at a 2 mil bond-line, application via screen print using a stencil onto the application, and its long term reliability in extreme temperature cycling and shock variation in a vertical setting.

Parker Chomerics GEL 8010 met all of customer's requirements for many types of lighting in outdoor applications; parking lots, construction sites, recreational areas, shopping centers, substations, and more.
