Screen Printed Thermal Interface Material Solution for LED Lighting
Traditional thermally conductive gap filler pads and thermal greases are typical materials available to use in this application. Thermal pastes, also called THERM-A-GAP GELS from Parker Chomerics are one-part component, crossed linked gel-like materials, proving much lower mechanical stress. These materials can be dispensed in variety of thicknesses, provide lower thermal impedance due being highly conformable and do not pump-out, or dry out like thermal grease products over time.
In this instance, the customer chose to use Parker Chomerics Thermal GEL 8010, due to its low bond-line minimum thickness of .002 in. (0.05 mm) and thermal conductivity of 3.0 W/m-K. GEL 8010 has the unique ability to be screen printed directly onto the back of the heat generating component.
Its relatively fast flow rate of 60 grams/min and operating temperature range of -67° to 392° F (-55° to 200° C) help to dissipate the heat to maintain the junction temperature of COB or PCBA components for a safe operation.
