Design Guidelines for Grounding, Shielding and Thermal Management in Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 Gateways

“Smaller is beautiful” has long been a trend for consumer electronic devices, especially passive ones such as routers that sit in the corner and operate in the background. Most devices must utilize solutions such as conductive foams or fabrics to serve as a grounding pad between boards, RF shields, and heat sinks. These low compression force solutions have the added benefit of being lightweight and very economical while providing a reliable electrical path. 

Electronics Component Manufacturer Requires Shield Ground Termination for Cable into a Bulkhead

An electronics component manufacturer required a shield ground termination for a cable transitioning into a bulkhead. A connector with backshell solution was not appropriate due to the size and cost implications. The cable shield ground termination was achieved by applying a molded conductive elastomer grommet of Parker Chomerics CHO-SEAL® 1310 silver-plated-glass-filled silicone elastomer.
