Engineering the Long Stroke: A Guide to Rodless Linear Actuators
Rodless cylinders can cut your machine footprint by 50%—but only if you size them correctly. In modern machine design, space is at a premium. Traditional rodded cylinders often fail when dealing with long strokes or high moment loads.

This 45-minute technical session dives into the physics of rodless technology to solve real-world linear motion challenges. We’ll strip away the marketing fluff to compare magnetically vs. mechanically coupled systems, identify sizing ‘gotchas,’ and walk through the real selection edges that drive packaging and safety—options/accessories engineers actually decide on, plus fail-safe behavior on loss of air/power and practical locking/braking strategies.
What you will learn:
  • Rodless Advantage: Rodless vs rodded
  • Moment Loading: Why calculating pitch, yaw, and roll is more critical than simple thrust
  • Tech Trade-offs: When to prioritize magnetically over mechanically coupled rodless cylinders
  • Design for Reality: Selection “edges” that drive packaging and safety
