Oil Sands Mining
Oil sands are a loose sand deposit containing a form of petroleum known as bitumen.  The method used to extract the bitumen is dependent on the depth of the deposit.  If the bitumen is close to the surface, conventional open pit mining techniques using hydraulic mining shovels and haul trucks are used.  For the most part, mined bitumen is typically upgraded into light oil.  In Canada, these mines operated in some of the harshest cold weather conditions requiring fluid power systems equal to the task.

Mining the bitumen

Large hydraulic shovels are used to excavated the oil sands from the mining site. These hydraulic mining shovels are subjected to a constant pounding from falling debris.  To facilitate the correct replacement of multiple hydraulic assemblies during the scheduled maintenance period, requires a robust asset management system.  The Parker Tracking System, or PTS as it is commonly referred to, gives fleet managers a very powerful tool capable of providing not only bill of material information, but also a predictive failure mode and timing.  This cloud base system gives users 24/7 access to asset records which contain all the information required to make critical maintenance decisions.

The plumbing of the hydraulic systems is a critical part of the productive operation of these units.  Parker’s Global Core series of multi spiral and braided hydraulic hose give fleet reliability managers piece of mind the equipment will be operational until the next scheduled maintenance period.  The flexible half bend radius is designed for easier routing, and the tough abrasion resistant covers ensure the assemblies will last longer.  Combined with Parker’s OnSite Container assembly fabrication center and Parkrimp system, downtime due to hose assembly failures can be minimized considerably.

Loading and Hauling

The mined bitumen is loaded and transported by 400 ton heavy haul trucks to the processing plant.  These large haul trucks are required to operate under very strict emission reduction standards.  To help ensure the diesel exhaust is complying with the industry standards, a urea-based diesel exhaust fluid is introduced into the fuel system.  This fluid needs to be maintained at a certain temperature to be effective.  Parker’s SCR series of selective catalytic reduction assemblies are purposely designed to meet the requirements of this critical application.  The SCR series is available with thermoplastic and EPDM core tube material for use in the suction, pressure and return parts of the circuit.
