Potash Mining
Mining potash is a technically challenging operation requiring the use of sophisticated equipment powered and controlled in part by hydraulic systems. Multiple continuous miner boring machines are used to extract the mineral by cutting tunnels into the ore deposits. The ore is then hoisted to the surface for processing at the mill.

Mining and Storing

Parker’s Gold Cup Series of pumps and motors are specifically designed for closed loop hydrostatic drive systems like the ones used to propel the continuous miner.  Continuous miners also have several ancillary hydraulic systems for various support functions.  The cutting heads performing the work at the face of the ore deposits are linked with a trim chain which is hydraulically tensioned, and the protective canopy shielding the operator from falling debris is also controlled hydraulically. These ancillary hydraulic circuits are powered through an open loop hydraulic system using Parker’s P1/PD series axial piston pumps and controlled through our D1VW and D3W series directional control valves.

The ore cut from the deposit it is moved to the back of the boring machine through a series of cross conveyers which are positioned hydraulically using Parker’s Calzoni Series MR fixed displacement radial piston motors.  From there the ore is moved to storage until it is ready to be hoisted to the surface by the skip where it is transferred to the mill for processing.

“Securing the Back”

Roof bolters are machines used to secure the tunnels and ensure no falling debris will pose a danger to underground personnel.  These units utilize closed loop hydrostatic drive systems to propel them, and Parker’s C Series variable displacement axial pump and motor combinations are designed to meet the rigorous requirements of this application.  To perform the bolting function, the machines have multiple tools mounted on the boom.  The first tool drills the holes and then indexes to a second tool which threads the bolt, securing the wire mesh in place.  The flow sharing feature of Parker’s L90 series directional control valves balances the functionality of the equipment, facilitating a smooth transition of hydraulic power between circuits making the unit more productive.

Milling and Transport to Market

Fixed plant operations like crushing/cleaning, floatation/drying and sizing/compaction use hydraulic power units to operate the equipment.  The monitoring of hydraulic system pressure and temperature is critical for proper power unit operation.  For situations where the environment can be hazardous or in many cases hard to reach, Parker’s SensoNode Blue sensors can be used to collect the necessary preventative maintenance data used to make decisions that will ensure maximum equipment up time.
