Precision Cut Press-in-Place Seals

Today's environmental challenges require materials and sealing profiles to withstand harsh conditions. Parker O-Ring & Engineered Seals (OES) Division develops custom sealing solutions for the automotive and electric vehicle markets, providing UL94 V-0 listed materials and custom designed profiles.

Sealing Challenge:

The customer had been utilizing a rectangular cross-sectioned static face seal produced by a lathe for one of their automotive components. The primary function of this seal was to safeguard against the infiltration of water, dust, and debris into the power take-off unit, particularly during inclement weather and water fording, which would otherwise result in corrosion and damage to the internal components. However, due to the face seal's exposed position during assembly and transportation, it was susceptible to dislodging. The customer was exploring various options when the O-Ring & Engineered Seals Division presented the most suitable solution.

Sealing Solution:

Parker O-Ring & Engineered Seals (OES) Division was able to solve this problem with a precision cut press-in-place (PIP) seal design. The lathe cut PIP seal has nibs designed into the O.D. of a regular lathe cut seal, creating an interference between the groove wall and the seal. This interference results in maximum seal retention. The FEA simulation above shows the seal’s deflected shape once it is installed into the groove.

Additionally, the precision cut PIP seal still maintains the rectangular cross section of a lathe cut seal, providing the maximum sealing contact area. A wider contact surface compensates for imperfections in mating components like porosity in cast grooves. For more information, please download the Press-in-Place bulletin, TSD 5434.

Parker OES’s unique extruding and cutting processes produce precision cut PIP seals with minimal tooling costs and without flash, voids or parting lines. For further information or to discuss your project needs with a Parker engineer, please visit Parker OES.

On-Demand Webinar: Parker Fluorocarbon Materials for Extreme Temperatures

In today's demanding industrial landscape, O-rings and seals are facing unprecedented challenges in critical applications and environments where temperatures and pressures reach extreme levels. Industries such as aerospace and oil & gas are pushing the limits, requiring sealing solutions that can withstand these harsh conditions. Traditionally, fluorocarbon rubber has been the workhorse material for seals, known for its exceptional performance. However, it had one limitation - poor performance in low temperatures.
