Exposing the Coal Seam

Surface coal mining operations begin by removing the overburden to expose the coal seam.  This can be done by either blasting or using a dragline excavator to strip the overburden away, depending on the geological conditions.

When Blasting Is Required

Surface drill crews probe ahead of the dragline to confirm if blasting is required.  These specialized drills use closed loop hydrostatic drives to propel the units and open loop hydraulic systems to operate the rotary drills.  Parker Gold Cup® series of closed loop pumps & motors are ideally suited for these bi-directional function applications.

Implement circuits like the derrick lift and rotary head pulldown are powered using open loop hydraulic systems.  Parker P2 series piston pumps are designed to provide very stable and quick response to system demands found in these applications.

When Blasting Is Not Required

If blasting is not required, a dragline excavator is used to strip the overburden and expose the coal seam.  This highly automated large cable operated shovel is electrically powered and moves on pontoons.  Multiple draw works swing and maneuver the bucket onto the surface, providing large tonnage removal of material with every cycle.

The hoisting cable system on these units utilize pneumatic braking and lubrication functions.  Parker Viking Xtreme pneumatic valve series are designed to provide pneumatic directional control in conditions as low as -40F were these units are often required to operate in.

To dampen shock from the loaded bucket, the dragline excavator has a boom cushioning system.  Parker’s A series piston accumulators use a V profile seal and back up washer to eliminate seal roll over typically found in high speed applications like shock suppression.

Loading and Hauling

Dozers are used to rip and prepare the exposed coal seam for the hydraulic shovels and frontend loaders to load the haul trucks. The material is moved to the processing mill facility where it is sized and prepared for transport to market.

To maximize uptime, these fleets of mobile equipment count on robust hose assemblies for their hydraulic, fuel and lubrication system plumbing. Parker’s Global Core series of spiral reinforced hose has a flexible half bend radius design for easier routing, and a tough abrasion resistant cover to last longer.  Combined with the Parker OnSite Container assembly fabrication center and Parkrimp system, down time due to hose assembly failures can be minimized considerably.
